VISION
In a city where loneliness and polarization are on the rise, Leon provides a safe and open meeting space that connects people who might not otherwise cross paths. A mix of all ages, genders, bodies, and backgrounds is an essential and enriching quality in everything we do. We invite people using dance and music as a shared language. A touch, eye contact, a smile, food, and coffee create immediate, non-verbal connections.
We love to work in the public space, where we engage with existing dynamics and interact with them. In a warm, respectful, and playful atmosphere, people can move freely, have fun, and improvise. This helps them build confidence, step out of their comfort zones, and push boundaries.
Leon seeks to break down rules and systems, consciously reversing stereotypical roles to allow people to find their own space and contribute freely. In doing so, they begin to see themselves and each other differently—surprised by one another’s bodies and talents, open to mutual learning and growth.
Through movement, Leon encourages everyone to embody an inclusive society—one where people can fully express themselves in creative freedom among others. A society that celebrates differences, embraces every person and every talent as equal, and is surrounded by mutual care.
"I love coming to Leon because I experience it as a unique place where I feel welcome and accepted, without judgments. I can be myself there and meet people I would never have otherwise encountered." (participant)

THE VALUES OF LEON
Leon = Horizontal
At Leon, we celebrate differences and see them as a strength. Diversity is a reality and an enriching human quality. Every person has the same needs and rights, regardless of personal characteristics. We believe that everyone can dance and move in their own unique way. Working horizontally at all levels is our goal, requiring a continuous learning process within the organization.
Leon = Free of Judgment
We recognize and embrace everyone’s talents. Everyone has something to contribute, and we learn from one another. We make space for emotions, opinions, and conflict. However, we do not judge and respect each other’s boundaries. At Leon, we do not tolerate discrimination or violence. We welcome every body, gender, disability, age, income level, faith, language, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, educational background, and social status.
Leon = Welcoming
Our practices are warm, inviting, and hospitable. We welcome people as part of a big family, where they can feel at home and relax. Hospitality also means that everyone can be themselves and contribute in their own unique way.
Leon = Vulnerable
We care for each other and strive to make our spaces safer. We ask people what they need to be part of Leon and embrace vulnerability. Lowering barriers is an ongoing and shared responsibility.
Leon = Experimental
Our practices have no artistic boundaries. Nothing is imposed. Everything is possible, and nothing is mandatory. Every form of leadership is organic, rooted in our shared values and mission.
Leon = Playful
Our practices are playful, simple, and light. We are a creative playground where rules can be reversed—or even broken—allowing for spontaneous and intuitive encounters. We have fun together and enjoy the feeling of being present in the here and now.
LEON'S METHOD
Leon’s working method is based on four recurring practices. These practices are inspired by the research and observations of Professors Maddy Janssens (KU Leuven) and Chris Steyaert (University of St. Gallen).
1 INVITER
Leon’s artistic practices have open doors. Welcoming and inviting people and organizations to participate is at the core of what we do. We invest in long-term partnerships with social organizations and frequently work in public spaces to actively reach out to people. We invite participants in a spontaneous and non-verbal way—through our eyes, hands, and gestures. It’s all about being present and staying engaged, with awareness of our surroundings and without judgment. We do not claim spaces but keep them open for possibilities. Participation is free or donation-based. Using simple choreographic principles, exercises, and improvisation, we build a shared dance together, step by step.
“It’s all about opening up. Know how to create space and out of this space comes magic.” (participant)
2 MIXING
Our artistic coaches facilitate encounters and community-building through dance and music. We intentionally mix people of all ages, genders, bodies, and backgrounds. In our workshops and performances, participants never remain in the same formations for long. We often use formats like warm-ups or post-session circles, ensuring everyone can see each other—without hierarchy or pressure to conform. We also connect organizations across different sectors, from schools and youth work to healthcare facilities, fostering new relationships and collaborations. Artistically, this mixing leads to a collective process of co-creation, where music and dance emerge organically, shaped by all participants.
“C'est le seul endroit on peut être différent ensemble. C'est très riche. La différence dans l'indifférence.” (participant)
3 REVERSING
Our artistic practices challenge stereotypes. A person with a disability might lead a warm-up, or a child might give instructions to the audience. We dance and make music in unconventional contexts, such as public spaces. Constantly reversing roles highlights existing differences while also creating space for something new. We believe everyone can learn from each other, and inspiration can come from anyone. This approach not only influences group dynamics but also shapes our internal organizational model and broad partner network, blending expertise across different sectors.
“Je gaat alles bekijken vanuit een perspectief van waaruit je normaal gezien niet kijkt. Ik zie mijn leerlingen elke dag in de klas, maar niet op deze manier.” (leerkracht en deelnemer)
4 Affirming
Affirming is about continuously repeating and experimenting with new, unexpected, and contrasting roles and positions. We give participants the opportunity to express their uniqueness in a direct, non-verbal way while connecting with others. Diversity becomes both a human and artistic quality that the whole group takes responsibility for. Everyone cares for each other and supports the community. During public workshops and performances, even spectators experience this atmosphere. The line between participant and observer becomes increasingly blurred. Together, we embody a new social reality that celebrates and embraces human variation.
“Les étrangers deviennent amis ici. Le matin, personne ne se connaît. Les gens ne se touchent pas. Deux heures plus tard, ils se prennent dans les bras.” (participant)
